Re: M777 for India and the British Army?

Actually what I'm noting as lost / degraded is one of the oldest roles of modern arty, neutralistion by indirect fire. Agree there's other things in the wind. 105mm could be lighter yet now if someone...

Re: M777 for India and the British Army?

Rocket artillery and mortars are likely to dominate in future, but there doesn't really seem to be an alternative for the six inch howitzer at this time. The South Africans have developed very long...

Aren't the French using 155mm for their air assault brigade? The CAESAR artillery piece?

Re: M777 for India and the British Army?

Quite possibly, there's more than one way to skin a cat, but note that they don't have a Light Gun equivalent although they did build one and that Caesar is an interesting alternate to the towed piece...

Re: M777 for India and the British Army?

Yes, and the French use 120mm at Bn level, again better suited to destruction than neutralisation. I was thinking more of grenade launchers, HMGs, sustained fire MGs and small calibre cannon. No idea...

Re: M777 for India and the British Army?

120mm mortar lethal burst radius is about the same as 155mm gun; 81mm about that of 105mm. RoF is higher for the mortars which is good for neutralisation; plunging fire means circular bursts which...

Re: M777 for India and the British Army?

Another economic option could be a 105 millimetre recoilless rifle, which, with mortars, brings fire power under more direct frontline control.

Re: M777 for India and the British Army?

Has anyone ever produced a delay action fuse for a mortar round? Seems like that would be ideal for an urban environment where you might want it to penetrate a building instead of exploding on the...

Re: M777 for India and the British Army?

Yep, Super Quick and .05 second are the options with 81mm and 51mm when we had it, same fuze in both. I have a feeling that is an ABCA common fuze, possibly the M734. Can also be useful to get bombs...

Re: M777 for India and the British Army?

In the Armored Cavalry Regiment we used to have a platoon of M-113s with a heavy mortar mounted. I always thought that was a really useful combination.

Re: M777 for India and the British Army?

No argument, mortars are great but they don't affect the 105mm / 155mm trade offs in arty. I really liked the Danish approach to Mor for Mech Inf, 2 x 81mm per Coy, 120mm in Mor Pl. The M113 mounted...

The howitzers still outrange the mortars; not too sure on the accuracy. I think they get tasked for counter battery. But if you're facing an insurgency that doesn't have heavy weapons, assuming that...

Re: M777 for India and the British Army?

Depends on the weight, especially the ammo weight, which is where I began. I can see that GS arty might drift to 155mm and something else, maybe mortars, maybe something else, probably a mix, take a...
